Understanding TANGEDCO Domestic Tariff Slabs (2024–2026)
Tamil Nadu electricity bills are calculated using a telescopic slab method. This means when your bi-monthly consumption crosses 500 units, the per-unit rate for earlier slabs also changes — not just the units above 500. This is why many consumers experience a sharp jump in their TANGEDCO bill even with a small increase in usage. The calculator above applies these exact slab rates so you can see the breakdown before your bill arrives.
Domestic Electricity Tariff Rates
For consumers using 500 units or below (New Scheme – 200 free units)
| Units Consumed (Bi-monthly) | Rate Per Unit |
|---|---|
| 1 – 200 units | ₹0 Free (New Scheme — 200 units) |
| 201 – 400 units | ₹4.70 per unit |
| 401 – 500 units | ₹6.30 per unit |
For consumers using above 500 units (Existing Tariff – 100 free units)
| Units Consumed (Bi-monthly) | Rate Per Unit |
|---|---|
| 1 – 100 units | ₹0 Free (100 units subsidy) |
| 101 – 400 units | ₹4.70 per unit |
| 401 – 500 units | ₹6.30 per unit |
| 501 – 600 units | ₹8.40 per unit |
| 601 – 800 units | ₹9.45 per unit |
| 801 – 1000 units | ₹10.50 per unit |
| Above 1000 units | ₹11.55 per unit |
Note: Tariff rates shown are based on TNERC Tariff Order No. 6 of 2024, effective July 01, 2024. Updated May 2026 to reflect the Tamil Nadu CM’s 200 free units announcement for consumers using ≤ 500 bi-monthly units. Rates are subject to change by TNERC at any time.

Tamil Nadu 200 Units Free Electricity Scheme for Domestic Consumers
Government of Tamil Nadu has announced provision of free electricity up to 200 units bimonthly to eligible domestic consumers in order to ease the burden on ordinary people by addressing the rising cost of living, offsetting the impact of inflation, and reducing their financial hardship.
Accordingly, the domestic electricity subsidy scheme has been revised with effect from 10.05.2026. Eligible domestic consumers with bimonthly consumption up to 500 units shall be provided free electricity up to 200 units. Consumers with bimonthly consumption exceeding 500 units shall continue under the existing tariff structure with free electricity benefit limited to 100 units.
For Example:
- Using ≤ 200 bi-monthly units? Your EB bill is ₹0 – all units are free under the new 200 units scheme.
- Using 201–500 units? Only the units above 200 are charged. Savings compared to the old tariff are significant – use the calculator above to see exactly how much.
- Using above 500 units? The older 100-unit free scheme applies. Your first 100 units are free and the telescopic rates apply from the 101st unit onward.
- No application needed – the subsidy is applied automatically to all domestic (LT-IA) connections.
Note: Above calculator focuses on energy charges only. Fixed charges and surcharges may appear on official bills.
How to Reduce Your EB Bill in Tamil Nadu (Practical Tips)
- Stay under 500 bi-monthly units to maximise the free units scheme. Crossing 500 units triggers telescopic repricing that can add ₹400–800 to your bill. Use this EB bill calculator to monitor your estimated usage mid-cycle.
- Switch old fans to BLDC fans. A 28W BLDC fan vs a 75W regular fan saves roughly 40 units per bi-monthly cycle per fan — that’s ₹188 saved per cycle at current slab rates.
- Set your AC to 24°C. Every degree lower adds about 6% to AC energy consumption.
- Replace any remaining CFL bulbs with LED. LED bulbs use 75% less energy for the same light output.
- Use 5-star rated ACs and refrigerators. A 5-star AC uses roughly 20–30% less power than a 3-star model.
- Unplug chargers, TVs, and set-top boxes when not in use. Standby consumption can account for 5–10% of a typical Tamil Nadu household’s electricity bill.
5 Common EB Bill Mistakes Consumers Make (and How to Avoid Them)
Most TANGEDCO bill disputes and overpayments are avoidable. Here are the five mistakes we see most often – and exactly what to do instead.
1. Not checking the meter reading on your bill
Always compare the “Present Reading” on your bill with an actual photo of your meter on reading day. One misread digit can inflate your bill by hundreds of rupees.
2. Ignoring the 500-unit threshold
Many families are unaware that crossing 500 units triggers telescopic repricing. Staying just under 500 units can save ₹400–₹800 per cycle.
3. Not verifying arrears before paying
Arrears can appear even after a previous bill was fully paid due to processing delays. Always verify on the TANGEDCO portal before assuming arrears are correct.
4. Leaving meter inaccessible on reading day
If the meter reader can’t access your premises, TANGEDCO issues an estimated bill — often inaccurate — leading to a large correction bill later.
5. Waiting too long to dispute a wrong bill
Pay the disputed bill first to avoid disconnection, then raise a complaint. Delaying can result in disconnection while the dispute is being resolved.
Other EB Bill Calculators You May Need
This calculator is built for domestic (LT-IA) connections, which cover the vast majority of Tamil Nadu households. If you have a different connection type, here is what applies to you:
- EB bill calculator for Chennai – The tariff slabs above apply uniformly across Tamil Nadu including Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, Trichy, and all other cities. The TANGEDCO tariff is state-wide, not city-specific.
- Commercial EB bill calculator – If you have a commercial (LT-IIA) connection, your tariff structure is different. TANGEDCO charges commercial consumers at higher rates starting from the first unit. We are working on a separate commercial calculator. For now, refer to the official TANGEDCO tariff order for LT-IIA rates.
- EB reading calculator – If you want to calculate consumption from two meter readings (previous reading and current reading), subtract the previous reading from the current reading. The result is your bi-monthly units. Enter that number into the calculator above.
- Monthly EB bill estimate – TANGEDCO bills on a bi-monthly (two-month) cycle. To estimate a monthly figure, divide your bi-monthly units by 2 and note that the slab rates shown apply to the full bi-monthly amount – your monthly estimate will be approximately half the calculated.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is tnebbillcalculator.info the official TANGEDCO or TNEB website?
No. This is an independent, unofficial estimation tool created for consumer convenience. Official billing is handled by TANGEDCO (Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation). For official bill payments, complaints, or account details, visit the official TANGEDCO portal at tangedco.gov.in.
Does this calculator include fixed charges, and how accurate is it?
This calculator estimates energy charges only — the portion based on units consumed, which is the largest component of most domestic bills. It uses the exact TANGEDCO tariff slabs effective from July 2024 and correctly applies the telescopic structure, but your actual bill will also include fixed charges (₹30–₹100), meter rent (₹10–₹30), electricity tax, Fuel Surcharge Adjustment (FSA), and any arrears. Typical variance from your actual bill is ₹80–₹200 due to these factors.
Why does my bill increase sharply after 500 units?
Tamil Nadu uses a telescopic tariff system, so crossing 500 units reprices your earlier slabs at higher rates too — not just the units above 500. See the tariff breakdown above for the exact slab rates.
What is the Fuel Surcharge Adjustment (FSA) on my bill?
FSA is a variable per-unit charge that TANGEDCO revises quarterly to recover its fuel procurement costs (coal, gas used in power generation). It is applied to your total units consumed and can range from ₹0.05 to ₹0.50 per unit. This is why your bill can increase even if your consumption stays the same from one cycle to the next.
How do I find my TANGEDCO consumer number?
Your consumer number (9–11 digits) is printed at the top of every electricity bill you receive. It is also on a sticker on your electricity meter box. You need it for online payments, complaints, and checking bill history on the TANGEDCO portal.
Can I pay my TNEB bill through this website?
No — this is an estimation tool only and doesn’t process payments. Pay your TANGEDCO electricity bill via the official TANGEDCO portal (tangedco.gov.in) or apps like PhonePe, Google Pay, or Paytm.
What is the difference between TNEB, TANGEDCO, and the EB?
These three terms all refer to Tamil Nadu’s electricity authority but reflect different points in its history. TNEB (Tamil Nadu Electricity Board) was the original state body. In 2010 it was reorganised into TANGEDCO (Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation) for distribution and TANTRANSCO for transmission. In everyday usage, Tamil Nadu consumers still call their electricity bill the ‘EB bill’ and their provider ‘the EB’ – both refer to TANGEDCO.
